As we know there is an awareness day for most things these days so it is no surprise that there is a national No Smoking Day. Obviously smokers are well aware of the damage they are doing to their health, their finances and to those they smoke around so I am not going to repeat all that here.

From talking to my clients who want help stopping smoking it is clear it is an addiction and a habit that is hard to break. Most smokers have tried to give up previously and sometimes successfully for a bit which makes it all the more frustrating for them that they can’t stop permanently. However we need to remember that for many it is stress relief and part of their social life and identity so they will need support to stop smoking.

What I would like to tell you about is the benefits of breaking this habit. Clients I have helped have done it because they hate what it is doing to them and need to for health reasons or to prove to themselves they are able to stop. I encourage clients to focus on the goal that is most important to them. Some want to save money and so I suggested they put the money they save on buying cigarettes into a jar and visually see the benefits and then treat themselves to something special, like a day out or even a holiday, to remind them of how significant this amount is. If their goal is to improve their health they will usually notice improvements quite quickly. They also like to know that the NHS report that “The good news is that after only one year of not smoking, your risk is reduced by half. After stopping for 15 years, your risk is similar to that of someone who has never smoked”

As part of my method I will help you identify why you started smoking and what your triggers are and I will work with you to find a different habit or belief to replace smoking. What I love is when clients who are heavy smokers and don’t think they will get through our session without a cigarette break say they don’t want a cigarette at the end of the session and can’t imagine ever wanting one again. I also love to hear about the plethora of benefits they notice in the weeks after our session, including sleeping better, being less breathless and getting their sense of smell back.
